Nau: Open for business unusual…, again - 30 Oct 2008

nau-groupshot.jpgWe’ve especially happy & proud to see NAU back and running !

This small company launched a while back a revolutionary concept in a world overflowing with consumer goods; that they only deserve to exist if their products and their practices are capable of contributing to positive, lasting and substantive change.

Early this year, NAU ceased it’s operations because “In the current highly risk-averse capital market, we simply could not raise the necessary funds to continue to move forward.”

Beyond their great products, what was so appealing to us at Laneo was their mantra and especially that after less than one year of business, they donated over $223,000 through their customer-directed giving program, Partners for Change.

We’re ecstatic to see them back in operations and fully support company’s like Nau, that have the audacity to challenge conventional paradigms of what a business should be.

Salomon Exo Tight: Compression counts - 26 Oct 2008

salomon-exo-tight.jpgI just got a pair of Salomon Exo Tights to try out and wanted to share the first impressions with those of you that run and are looking for some fresh sensations.

First encounter is actually getting the things ON; I now understand why they call them “tights”! For those that are Triathletes, you won’t be wavered because you have to use the same technique as our wetsuits, but for first timers, don’t be surprised by the need to pinch and pull anything you can get your hands on. They recommend you buy and smaller size than you do regularly, which initially feels downright impossible (even more if you’re a “bit overweight” like in my case) and this gets even worse when you stand up and move to the door to go outside with fear of these things splitting in two on your first stride and leaving you in your intimates. But fear none, Salomon’s R&D have done their work and believe me, after only a couple of K’s you will never want to run with something else!

The compression (which varies in pressure at different places in your legs and rear) works wonders and you quickly start to feel a true balance in your own effort and these shorties. I especially appreciated the support they gave me on ascents and descents, when your thighs start “heating” up and they seem to help me propel my knees better when on a winding uphill trail.

The extensive reading material stuck to the label at purchase says keeping them on long after your workout, which is no doubt true, lowers recuperating times but I haven’t had the time to wander around the house in these yet. Salomon, who has done a lot of research in Trail Running and has brought out an extensive line of shoes and apparel seem to be on to something with these Salomon Exo Tights and though they’re not made out of any special recycled or natural material, the gang at Laneo gives them a “thumbs up” because it might just get some more people off the roads and into the forest and trails!

Fitbit: inspires people to exercise more, eat better and live a healthier lifestyle - 11 Oct 2008

fitbit-pocket.jpgWe just ran across this nifty little gadget that attracted our attention, basically because it “should” help answer one of those questions that a lot of athletes ask themselves in private; “am I really healthy” even though I exercise and eat accordingly.

“The FITBIT Tracker is an ultra-compact wireless wearable device that automatically tracks and wirelessly uploads data about a person’s activities, such as exercise intensity levels, calories burned, sleep quality, steps and distance. It is as small as a pack of matches and clips securely onto any article of clothing or slips easily into a pocket. The Tracker uses motion sensing technology to precisely capture all moment-to-moment physical activity throughout the day and night. It also measures sleep quality to provide a holistic view of a 24-hour period. At the click of a button, calories, steps and distance are illuminated and displayed on the Tracker. In addition to these numerical measurements, the Tracker also displays a user’s progress toward their goals in the form of an avatar that changes as a user advances toward or falls behind their goals.

Data collected by the FITBIT Tracker is wirelessly uploaded to a Website where the wearer can see their information and track their progress toward personal goals. The Website’s motivational interface encourages users to share progress and lets people create groups made up of friends, family or co-workers to jointly work towards a common goal. On the Website, users can also log nutrition, weight and other health information in order to gain a complete picture of their health.”

At Laneo, we think FITBIT is a pretty cool gadget, because it is going to get more people “moving” and becoming “aware” of their body, in a nutshell; it’s a “step” in the right direction.

Go and visit their website here, they should be shipping the device towards this Xmas and we’ll keep you posted when we receive our’s !
