Earth Spirit from Snowbroader - 17 Apr 2008

snowbroader.jpgEveryone knows that the dudes at Snowbroader are totally cool but what they just did for the Planet is out of this world!

One of Laneo’s 1st members and co-founder of Snowbroader, Nicolas, just sent me the link to their new on-line store and blew me away when he announced that for every item sold, 1€ was going to be donated to Laneo to help clean up our playground!

If that isn’t concrete stuff, I don’t know what is.

Check out their blog and spread the word; the more we are, the more we can do!

Interview: How green is Sailing ? - 27 Feb 2008

Here’s an interview of 2 French sailors, and members of Laneo, who share with us some interesting views on their sport, the sailing industry and the environment. This interview is in French as it refers to many untranslatable facets of this culture and I think it’s only fair for those French speaking members of Laneo and our readers to be able to listen to their compatriots in “Molière’s language”. Plus, we’ll be doing more and more interviews of Laneo members around the world and these will be conducted (if possible) in the local language.

If you’d like to hear & read more about these two passionate sailors, please check out their blogs:

Enjoy !

Jiwok: Music to your training - 25 Feb 2008

jiwok_jiwok_mp3.jpgOur friends at JIWOK (they’ve enrolled over 120 members) have just launched a cool new MP3 Training Program to help everyone achieve their goals while having fun. The originality is that this service is delivered via the web onto any MP3 device and includes not only great music (under a Creative Commons license) but real scientific based coaching that is synced to the tracks. Anyone who has ever done any running knows what it’s like constantly gazing at your wristwatch computer looking for indications on whatever parameter you programmed if for, while trying to maintain a specific rhythm! Result – you almost get seasick while doing it. What’s neat about this is now it’s the music that tells you when to make your effort or to cool down and even better, you can choose from a wide range of training programs and different types of music, so you have an endless variety of material to get you out the door! And if that wasn’t enough, it’s free and you can join the community and share whatever crosses your mind with other athletes around the world!

Take a minute and check them out, they’re really great guy’s at JIWOK and just like us – they want to “save our playground”!

Mini-Movie #1: Courbevoie Triathlon (France) - 22 Feb 2008

As I mentioned in a previous post, we’re starting to receive some great initiatives from around the world in the form of short sport oriented videos that focus on eco-sports initiatives to demonstrate what exactly “reclaiming our playground” means.

Here’s the 1st of what we hope will be an international series of mini-movies that has been launched by Courbevoie Triathlon (just outside Paris, France) and in this sequence, we’re going “behind the scenes” to one of their prepatory meetings.

Enjoy !

Laneo attends the LIFT Conference - 11 Feb 2008

lift-08.jpgLaneo attended the LIFT 08 Conference in Geneva last week, a conference about the challenges and opportunities of technology in our society. In the same category as DLD 08 (see post below) but very different in style and flavor, LIFT was once again an excellent venue for spreading the word on Laneo’s mission and also a true learning experience. Some of the keynotes that caught my eye (and ear’s) were the following:

  • Younghee Jung, Anthropologist working for Nokia in Tokyo & Paul Dourish, a researcher from University of California Irvine about user experience.
  • Rafi Haladjian, founder of Minitel start-ups and internet/wi-fi providers in France about his latest venture; Violet.
  • Tom Taylor from Headshift, talk about how to use peer pressure and social networking to get ordinary people to change their behavior in favor of more sustainable activities.

You can see full-screen videos of the presentations here VPOD.TV

LIFT 08 is an example, and there are others, that bringing together a very wide variety of people from around the world to promote and facilitate discussion about new technologies and their impact on our society, is really effective.

What are your Eco-Sports Resolutions for 2008? - 01 Jan 2008

2008-resolutions.jpgIt’s that time of the year again when everyone makes their “New Year’s Resolutions” to start the year off on the “right foot”.

We don’t know where this tradition came from but it has spread across the world and become a ritual for everyone at any age. If you’re looking for some inspiration, here’s a selection of 5 of our “Top New Year Resolutions for 2008 for Laneo Headquarters in Paris”:

1) Run a Trail Event that has a “different” route than last year’s edition.
2) Purchase more than 80% of our Sports, Leisure and Business products & textiles that are eco-friendly (last year we achieved 68%).
3) Participate in at least 3 Cleanup Events and Run Laneo’s 1st Event.
4) Reduce the number of “Laneo’s Driven Kilometers” by 30% (last year was 2,332 kms)
5) Match our 2007 Goal; print only 1 Corporate Marketing document per year (last year, we did a bookmark for our prospects).

If you have some New Year resolution that you’d like to share, hit the “Comments” button below and tell everyone what you’re going to do this year.

Everyone at Laneo wishes you and your loved one’s a very Happy New Year !

Laneo Mini-Movies - 30 Dec 2007

mini-movies.jpgIf the idea of making a short and amusing video about the preservation of the environment, appeals to you – read on – and perhaps create a video of your own.

Several Laneo members in 5 European countries have started to produce short movies with their sports training buddies and club members. The content and topic have been decided upon by the participants and will focus on eco-sports initiatives. The goal is to “show” Laneo members and visitors worldwide, what exactly it means to “reclaim your playground”. The videos are being filmed with standard digital movie cameras and edited by passionate sports & nature lovers on their computers, enhanced with fun effects, music and titles. 90% of the conversation is in local language but English voice over will be provided to help others understand what is going on. Although the methodology is loose, participants are expected to contribute to each video in some way and share their experience with peers via blogs, photo sharing, bookmarking and other social networking sites.

This is a great way for hobbiest, amateurs and up & coming video directors to showcase their skills across the world, especially to our network of corporate partners who are always looking for fresh talent.

I hope you’re as excited as I am to SHOW the world how it’s done. I’m sure we’ll all be proud to see the finished mini-movies here on the Laneo Blog starting January 2008.

If you’d like to participate, contact me via the “Contact Form” on the Laneo website!

New designs at the Laneo Store - 19 Dec 2007

new-design.jpgAs this year’s festive events near (Christmas, New Year’s, Epiphany…) we decided it was time to add some fun new designs to our store to provide you with an opportunity for you’re your loved ones; one of a kind gifts that not only look good, but do good for the planet.

Laneo is a new and exciting way to get involved in the mission to “Save the Planet” and what better way to make a statement than by proudly wearing a shirt that, especially to the younger generations. Remember, funds from the sale of these items are being used to fuel our growth but more importantly; wearing a Laneo Hoodie or Long Sleeve Shirt might have a more important effect – raising awareness of those close to you.

Here’s a sneak peak at one of the designs you’ll see at the store – hope you like it and the others!

Should we assist Wilderness Expeditions? - 26 Oct 2007

expeditions.jpgLately Laneo organizers have been receiving a lot of sponsorship requests from expedition organizers. Yes, those organizations that zigzag the planet in an effort often related to some form of educational, social or scientific goal while visiting the most hostile and remote areas of our planet. Everyone ranging from small initiatives, made up of just a few outdoor adventurers to sophisticated organizations that have solid institutional backing and impressive CV’s has been asking us for sponsorship.

Since these virgin areas of our planet are fewer and fewer today, these expedition teams go to incredible lengths to plan often very complex and entangled voyages, that carry heavy price tags.

What do you think? Should we assist these types of projects and if yes, which type? Please use the comments function below this post – hope to hear from you soon!

Laneo supports Eco-Music - 22 Oct 2007

lisapaul.pngI’m really proud of the people behind the design and functionality of the Laneo Blog. Not only did they do a great job in my opinion, but I recently learned they make “eco-music”. Paul who runs TWO THIRTY (the agency that designed and maintains our Laneo blog) is an avid surfer and back country camper. He is also a very accomplished musician whose group MOJAVE has just finished recording a great new album called “Stories”.

Paul and I have often talked about the place music has in our outdoor sports experience. Paul says to me – “it brings background music to the dances of waves and the ballet of leaves” and even though I’m not a musician, I really understand what he means.

Everyone’s personal taste in music is different of course, but I’m sure you’ll find his approach to distributing it, a compelling story. You see MOJAVE is only distributing their music via on-line means, specifically because of all the waste and pollution associated with producing and fabricating CD’s, and they’re not stopping there. They also belong to the “1% for the PLANET” which means they donate 1% of their album sales to actions in favor of the planet.

In times of ultra competitive ambition and ruthless capitalism, we at Laneo find this outright fantastic. When you have a minute, pop over to iTunes and listen to a sample of MOJAVE. I believe you will enjoy the music as much as we do – and maybe even end up purchasing a copy for yourself.
