Nike’s 10K “Human Race” is drawing closer; race day is 31.08.2008 and it looks like there’s going to be millions of us out there that day!!
Besides being a great way to get people outdoors, together and having fun, this is a perfect example of how “some” companies are harnessing the web by “creating content” and not just looking for a quick dollar, euro or whatever. Event-Based Advertising is “better” than popups (when is it all going to stop or at least become intelligent) because it gives people something “before” asking for their patronage.
Most of the Laneo team is going out to participate on August 31st, maybe we’ll see you there?!

If you want to get involved in a really great initiative and you’re near or visiting the French Alps, then go and check out our friends MOUNTAIN RIDERS and their annual Cleanup Weekend Website here.
This is another great team made up of Skiers, Snowboarders, Mountain Bikers, Climbers and generally passionate outdoor enthusiasts that have been extremely successful at animating a tremendous range of Eco-initiatives from School Classes, Publications, Partnerships (see previous post on the “Defi pour la Terre”) and Guide Books; you can practically not visit the Alp Region without seeing something from this Association !
Probably the favorite moment of the year for us at Laneo is their series of cleanups that they organize with a growing number of local associations and communities. These events draw big crowds of people that are always astonished to see the extent of the mess left behind after the snow thaws – and we guarantee that once you see it, you can’t forget it !
It’s happening this weekend, May 24th & 25th and there are an unimaginable number of ski stations that are involved (and others all throughout the summer), so there must be one near you – Laneo hopes to see you there !!

For the 13th consecutive year our friends at SURFRIDER EUROPE held their annual “Ocean Initiatives” on March 21 thru 23rd all across Europe, mobilizing over 15,000 people to help cleanup beaches, lakes and rivers.
This year was again another success with over 335 cleanups taking place (260 of them in France) regardless of the terrible weather conditions across Europe throughout the weekend.
I’ve known Stephane Latxague, Director of Surfrider Europe for about 2 years and am really impressed with the work he and his team do year round walking the talk, teaching and motivating people tirelessly to restore and protect our Planet. It’s this kind of dedication that motivates us at Laneo to continue working hard to help teams like Surfrider Europe to enhance their operations and develop their impact.
Take a minute and checkout their dedicated site for this operation HERE (it’s in 6 languages and has loads of really interesting information, photos, videos, maps…).
Surfrider Foundation Europe works in conjunction with the other branches of Surfrider Foundation all around the world.

For our European readers, the 2nd edition of RAID’SPECT will take place this year on June 14 & 15 at Hauteville Lompnes in France. Co-Sponsored by the UFOLEP and QUECHUA, this unique event combines; MTB, Orienteering, Canyoning, Via Ferrata, Archery etc.. by teams of 2. The event is practically “carbon zeo” and everything is done to try to reduce environmental impact to literally nothing more than a family outing, even the food is locally produced and entirely organic. Run in parallel, there is a Eco-Expo with a number of manufacturers, local and national associations and federations that help participants understand how they can participate further and there are a series of debates & conferences that animate the 2 day event for those that aren’t participating in the raid.
We at Laneo think that last year’s event was great and this year’s will no doubt be even better, so check out the event, it’s not too late!

These days, more and more outdoor enthusiasts are taking part in some form of outdoor event, whether it be a highly organized race or a simple friendly get together. I’ve tried a few hundred of these myself and have recently researched the wide variety of events out there, in the 40 plus sports categories that Laneo supports.
What jumps out at me most is the lack of initiatives put in place to balance out the negative effects of the hundreds or even thousands of people that participate in these, I must admit, fantastically fun events.
Yes of course there are some that promote wonderful eco friendly schemes, (for example the UTMB, X Games, Maverick Surf Contest events) but I’m sure you have heard of more, so help us promote them.
Please use the comment function below this post and send us back the names and url’s of events that have impressed you with their eco-friendliness and maybe describe a little what they’re doing that is special.

The PICNIC’07 conference is Europe’s most dynamic event devoted to creativity and innovation in the media, technology and entertainment industries. Designed for creatives, entrepreneurs, innovation and technology experts, media professionals, and business people, the conference showcases the latest innovative and creative trends relevant to the media and entertainment industries.
PICNIC is not only a conference, it’s a downright festival. Aimed at people who care about the future and want to play a role in shaping it – the PICNIC offers a week of fresh creative & innovative ideas. One of the world’s leading events where creative minds from the world of media, entertainment, science and the arts convene in Amsterdam from Monday 24th September to Saturday 29th September 2007.
To encourage and aid the invention of new green products and services, the Dutch Postcode Lottery and PICNIC presented this year the PICNIC Green Challenge – the challenge to come up with a greenhouse-gas-reducing product or service. The entrant with the best idea will win €500,000, expert coaching, and a starting list of customers, so he or she can bring the invention to the marketplace within two years.
LANEO will be present at this event for only one day, (other priorities are taking me back to Paris) but I really hope to see more and more of these Tech & Media Conferences start giving back to the environment. It’s events like these that draw innovative and entrepreneurial people from all over the world and when joining forces for the planet, we can really make a difference!
