If you want to get involved in a really great initiative and you’re near or visiting the French Alps, then go and check out our friends MOUNTAIN RIDERS and their annual Cleanup Weekend Website here.
This is another great team made up of Skiers, Snowboarders, Mountain Bikers, Climbers and generally passionate outdoor enthusiasts that have been extremely successful at animating a tremendous range of Eco-initiatives from School Classes, Publications, Partnerships (see previous post on the “Defi pour la Terre”) and Guide Books; you can practically not visit the Alp Region without seeing something from this Association !
Probably the favorite moment of the year for us at Laneo is their series of cleanups that they organize with a growing number of local associations and communities. These events draw big crowds of people that are always astonished to see the extent of the mess left behind after the snow thaws – and we guarantee that once you see it, you can’t forget it !
It’s happening this weekend, May 24th & 25th and there are an unimaginable number of ski stations that are involved (and others all throughout the summer), so there must be one near you – Laneo hopes to see you there !!

Wired Magazine’s June issue “Inconvenient Truths: Get Ready to Rethink What It Means to Be Green”, will certainly raise a few eyebrows when it comes out next month.
This highly admired magazine has always taken the “out of the box” angle on a tremendous variety of subjects but this time, it’s journalists are tackling one of humanities current hot topics; the Planet.
Their point is that we should embrace change and actually “slaughter some of environmentalism’s sacred cows” such as a) accept genetic engineering, b) embrace nuclear power, c) A/C is ok and others in order to win the war on global warming.
We’re impatiently awaiting the issue to hit our news stands in Paris but whatever we read, we’ll continue to take our bikes to work, each local grown food and prefer sustainable products.

At Laneo we love simple, fun and thought provoking websites especially those that grasp the potential of the web and what some call Web 2.0 (from Wikipedia: ” Web 2.0 is a term describing the trend in the use of World Wide Web technology and web design that aims to enhance creativity, information sharing, and, most notably, collaboration among users.”).
One of our favorite brands is PATAGONIA and we try and follow every initiative they launch and we especially liked last year’s launch of their so-called “FOOTPRINT CHRONICLES” which they describe as,
“The Footprint Chronicles is an interactive mini-site that allows you to track the impact of ten specific Patagonia products from design through delivery.”
What was deemed as “just a gimmick” from their detractors and competitors was shortsighted; this is a perfect example of how an easy to use tool that provides total visibility into a company’s’ sourcing and production can have a positive impact on not only the manufacturer itself but also, educate the consumer on their clothing and other purchases.
Patagonia went even farther and provided a feedback form that linked directly to their blog and provided them with the input to add, just recently, 5 new products from their spring 2008 lineup!
The point is, using the web to display meaningful metrics on a macro level and promoting user input can produce some big changes in corporate decision making and help steer us all to a cleaner future.
5 stars from us at Laneo!

Today is Earth Day and Laneo teamed up with some good friends of ours, and renowned French Web Start-Up, MOOVEMENT (Recruiting 2.0), to promote human resources as a determining factor in sustainable development via a dedicated web recruiting site called, ECO-MOOVEMENT.
Richard Menneveux, Co-Founder, and I have often talked about this tirelessly and he has been a leading figure here in France and in Europe on improving the “match-making” between individuals and companies based on intrinsic personal values and innovative technology.
At Laneo, we’re still in the development phase and won’t be recruiting more than 4-5 additional people this year but when we do, we’re going to be looking for “special people” with not only business acumen; people who’s outdoor values match ours and who want to further the environmental cause.
Initiatives like MOOVEMENT are another great example at how leading edge web-based systems are helping bring the “right” people together that is going to make our place, planet earth, a better place to live!

Everyone knows that the dudes at Snowbroader are totally cool but what they just did for the Planet is out of this world!
One of Laneo’s 1st members and co-founder of Snowbroader, Nicolas, just sent me the link to their new on-line store and blew me away when he announced that for every item sold, 1€ was going to be donated to Laneo to help clean up our playground!
If that isn’t concrete stuff, I don’t know what is.
Check out their blog and spread the word; the more we are, the more we can do!

The very well known and admired French Journalist – Would Be Politician – Environmental Guru & Foundation President, Nicolas HULOT’s initiative DEFI POUR LA TERRE has launched a web portal aimed at Outdoor Enthusiasts. This 3 year old online community – organization has become a great success here in France providing a very impressive range of tools and services to stimulate citizen participation in the Environmental – Climate – Social issues, all of it being expertly relayed by the very charismatic Nicolas Hulot during his TV and Radio shows and other media appearances and conferences. The Outdoor Sports portal provides a carbon impact evaluation test, “how-to” pamphlets and other media tools for each major outdoor sport and links to the other services of the site in order to encourage those playing outdoors to start taking action.
This is yet another great initiative that is sure to have great exposure and we hope a big impact for the summer vacation season and we’re especially proud to see that this site has be jointly developed by one of Laneo’s good friends “MOUNTAIN RIDERS”; a superbly run small outfit in the French Alps, check these guy’s out!

Today is “Blog Action Day”, an international initiative of bloggers with the aim of uniting thousands of blogging voices, talking about one issue for one day – the environment. To raise awareness major blogs have signed up to participate, including Lifehacker, Dumb Little Man, Lifehack.org, Get Rich Slowly, Web Worker Daily, GigaOm, The Simple Dollar, Zen Habits, Freelance Switch, LifeClever, Unclutterer, Pronet Advertising, Wise Bread and many more.
“For just one day, we’d like to unite as many of the millions of bloggers around the world and speak about one issue – the environment,” said Collis Ta’eed, an Australian blogger from FreelanceSwitch.com, and a cofounder of Blog Action Day. “We want to display the potential and the power of the blogging community, which is a disparate community but one with an amazing size, breadth and diversity. By bringing everyone together for one day, we can see just how much can be achieved, and how much we can be heard.”
We at Laneo think that this initiative is very powerful and perfectly illustrates the positive leverage the internet can have on important global issues. As we have always talked about environmental issues in each post, what I’d like to underline today is simply – the power of uniting people from around the world on urgent issues such as saving the planet. We’re all extremely busy people and “free time” is becoming a very sought after luxury, so even a small gesture, such as this blog post, when added to thousands of others can instantly become, the “tipping point” (which is a great read by the way). If you do read this post, please spread the word asking people to participate in whatever manner they choose and if you have a blog, join the Blog Action Day and do a short post – it might make a big difference.

I get a lot of emails from Laneo members who ask why everything on our blog is in English. Although Mandarin is the largest spoken language (it is spoken by 873 million people around the world), English is the most readily spoken by Laneo members and readers. And since it is our mission to share “our opinion” with the largest number of people possible – English seemed like a logical choice – especially since it is impossible for me to write every blog post in a number of languages.
And though the Laneo blog may be written in English, it covers a large range of news and events from around the world. For example, I recently ran across a great magazine this week called SALAMANDER. I’m sure our French members and readers around the world will recognize and appreciate the choice.
SALAMANDER was founded in 1983 by Julien Perrot, (it is based in Neuchatel, Switzerland) and has grown into a 17 person company that produces a bi-monthly magazine (for adults and children), CD’s, a very rich website, a boutique and even a yearly festival.
This unique brand strives to cultivate the SALAMANDER spirit. Its mission is to open the hearts of a very large audience to the innumerable gifts that nature offers us, and to increase knowledge and respect of the beauty surrounding us. Without advertisements, SALAMANDER is almost entirely financed by reader subscriptions. In fact, you cannot purchase the magazine in kiosks – specifically to avoid the paper waste associated with unsold goods.
SALAMANDER is a great example of how simple yet thought-provoking journalism can be at changing our outlook on nature.
The Laneo blog, regardless of the language it is written in, strives to achieve that same balance. And it is my sincerest hope that all Laneo members, across the world, in all the languages – are able to share and partake in what we are doing.
