Should we assist Wilderness Expeditions? - 26 Oct 2007

expeditions.jpgLately Laneo organizers have been receiving a lot of sponsorship requests from expedition organizers. Yes, those organizations that zigzag the planet in an effort often related to some form of educational, social or scientific goal while visiting the most hostile and remote areas of our planet. Everyone ranging from small initiatives, made up of just a few outdoor adventurers to sophisticated organizations that have solid institutional backing and impressive CV’s has been asking us for sponsorship.

Since these virgin areas of our planet are fewer and fewer today, these expedition teams go to incredible lengths to plan often very complex and entangled voyages, that carry heavy price tags.

What do you think? Should we assist these types of projects and if yes, which type? Please use the comments function below this post – hope to hear from you soon!

No. At least not at this stage of Laneos newly started life. Let major companies and cooperations sponsor such expeditions. These remote places live their own beautiful life as they are – they are nature in their purest untouched raw form. They don´t need woman/man to look after them. These expeditions go there – not to protect the environment, for studies and social reasons maybe – but to enjoy the power of it, feeling the connection with themselves and the raw nature, to indulge in the excitement of the expedition: simply – to me – for other reasons than what Laneo stands for. Yet, I think each demand needs to be truly read properly, because there may always be exceptions. But my recommendation is a “no” – as a rule.

NO NO NO As you say areas are virgins!!!!!
Many races and expeditions say ” we are ECO responsible”
for example for UTMB race this is not a Eco Race because when you make a race with 4000 Trail runners just on single track …WHAT this is a JOKE Dude…..;)
FU….all Himalaya expeditions and for all mountains expeditions …
Sorry for my first comment (i don’t still speak english)

since those expeditions are more of personal show than of planet discovery, since they are already sponsored when questions are already known and answers are presupposed…why should Laneo support them ?

Dear all, I don’t think there is and should be an unilateral answer. Depends strongly on the goal and nature of the expedition. As general secretary of Mountain Wilderness, to which the very notion of wilderness is central, I can give our position. If our sponsorship is asked only as a label of eco-responsibility, without real involvment in mountain protection, the answer is “no”. If there is a real value for the mountain environment, we support the expedition. As an example of the last, I can mention the cleaning expeditipon under preparation, planned by Breffni Bolze, at the Aconcagua (http://mountainwilderness.org/index.php?rub=175&art=15&lg=en). But we already know Breffni, and his work speaks for him : three cleaning expeditions at Dhaulagiri.

Laneo,

I am a bit late to this discussion and also take a seperate approach. I actually think this would be an awesome idea to get the name out and the message across, if the funds are feasable for you to support such expeditions. I think that if a sponsorship was put forth that the expedition would have to follow some Laneo guidelines: recycling, Nothing left behind, Eco-friendly gear..(hopefully from your partnerships) as well as items like solarpower ect. where feasable. It would be a good way to gt the name out, a good way to get more people involved, plus, could possibly help out the Planet.
